TeletestTeletest® is a long-range ultrasonic NDE technology that was originally developed for detecting under insulation corrosion in above ground petrochemical facilities but has found widespread application in a multitude of other industry inspection situations. Teletest® is primarily a screening tool with the inspection premise of testing large volumes of pipe from one single test point. Utilizing low frequency ultrasonic waves the need for messy couplant is eliminated by air/ pressure coupled transducers. The principal advantage is that long lengths of pipe, up to 175m (575ft) in each direction, may be examined from a single test point. The benefits of long-range ultrasonic testing:
The correct placement of the transducer array allows guided waves to propagate symmetrically along the entire pipe segment, effectively exciting the entire wall thickness with a circular type wave form. The propagation of the guided waves are governed by frequency and pipe wall thickness, when the wave encounters a change in wall thickness (Corrosion) sound wave energy will reflect back to the transducer origin creating a simple amplitude vs. distance A-Scan signal on the CRT. The system cannot differentiate between ID or OD defects and will report the volumetric cross-sectional wall loss above 9% and is sensitive to 3%. New developments utilizing focused guided waves and phased array type wave propagation have been implemented in the new mark II generation tool. Coast NDE Presentations
