Advanced Ultrasonic Sizing Course

Coast to Coast NDE successfully held our 1st of many Advanced Ultrasonic Sizing Training Classes utilizing the training methods developed by Mr. J. Mark Davis. The course was attended by 8 of our senior technicians with three account managers auditing the course for the benefit our Customers. The Detection and Sizing methods taught in the course were originally developed at EPRI in 1982 and 1983 respectively. Coast NDE uses these methods and other 70° sizing methods to determine our client’s discontinuity situations.

There are several transducers used to categorize the depth or location of the discontinuities within the wall thickness of the test specimen. The material thickness is divided into 3 zones and each sizing method has a zone or range of application. The ID Creeping Wave bounds a flaw into a zone. The Tip Diffraction method is used for the inner 1/3t, BiModal is used for the middle 1/3t and Refracted Longitudinal Waves and Shear Waves are used for the outer 1/3t.

ID Creeping Waves (IDCR) are used for detection and Characterization and uses a combination of refracted longitudinal waves and shear waves.

Tip Diffraction (Time of Flight), BiModal (Time of Flight), Focused Refracted Longitudinal Wave and finally Traditional Shear Wave transducers are used to categorize the discontinuities.

BiModal (Time of Flight and Delta Time of Flight), uses High Angle Longitudinal Waves, Direct and Indirect Shear Waves that create ID Creeping Waves.

Refracted Longitudinal Wave and Refracted Shear Wave Methods that are used to measure the remaining ligament of good material above the discontinuity.
